The American Auto giant, General Motors is facing a tough time in its Indian subsidiary, GM India. The company is facing a labor unrest at its Halol plant for the second time in the last 14 months. All 700 workers have gone on strike and the production has come to a stand still in the plant. The plant is situated at Vadodara and the plant marked a production of 285 vehicles till Thursday evening. At present a total of 1,000 workers are employed at the GM plant at Halol. Among these workers those who are on strike have come up with a new union under INTUC.

The workers have claimed that the company is throwing extra work burden on them and over exploitation of workers is done in the plant. Moreover the union has also pointed out the health hazards they are facing. The union also claimed PF Act, gratuity norms and rules of Industrial Safety and Health Act violation by the company. As per the company’s officials the strike is absolutely illegal. As per the statement made by GM India vice-president P Balendran the union has violated the 3-year accord reached in October when the workers had struck work. He said that there was no bias in transfer of workers.

He also said that the company has been following all necessary norms of employment. As per the claims made by the labor union, those workers who pointed out the health issues, were transferred by the company to dealer and sub-dealer outlets across Gurgaon, Haryana and Andhra Pradesh. Balendran has commented that during the last strike all the demands of workers were taken well care of by the company and a 3 year agreement was signed between them in presence of the labor commissioner. The strike will certainly hamper the smooth functioning of the company.
