General Motors' workers strike ends, production resumes
Auto Major General Motors India is taking a sigh of relief as a 4-day long strike at the Halol facility of the company comes to an end. The company announced that the production at the facility has resumed now. The strike was started by the workers of the company who were demanding a rise in their wages. This strike went on for four days but the same has now come to an end. The company has also made it clear that it has not surrendered to the demand of increasing the wages of the workers. The company further added that it has announced resumption of production as a pre-condition for any further discussion or argument.
P Balendran, Vice-President, General Motors India stated that the workers’ strike came to an end and the production began from the morning (3rd Nov,10). He also said that though no new agreement has emerged but they do not mind negotiating the issue only if the production work goes on. He further stated that the workers of the company do not have a registered union at the Halol plant and therefore the strike loses its legal form. Apart from this, the state labour officials have also tried to convince the workers by saying that the salary structure that the company is providing to the workers is already more than the average salary structure of the company, added Balendran. The Halol plant has got the capacity of producing one hundred fifty vehicles each day. This production work came to an end when around nine hundred workers of the company declared a strike on 29th of October. The total production loss during the strike amounted to 450 units.
As far as the installed capacity of General Motors’ Halol plant is concerned, it produces 85,000 units each year in three shifts. However, at present, General Motors India is running merely two shifts which amount for an equal share of complete everyday production. The Halol plant also recruits around 100 contract staff and it was this staff which did not take part in the recent strike. At the Halol plant, General Motors India manufactures its models like Chevrolet Aveo U-VA, Chevrolet Aveo, Chevrolet Optra, Chevrolet Cruze and Chevrolet Tavera.
