The rising levels of air pollution in the national capital forced the government to ban diesel vehicles, throwing automakers and the auto market into chaos. The market for SUVs was majorly affected since these brutes are usually powered by big diesel engines. Automakers like Mahindra downsized their engines, while others introduced petrol variants of their SUVs. Luxury automakers mostly went for the second option. BMW recently introduced the petrol variant of its popular SUV, the X3, and it competes with the other luxury petrol SUVs introduced this year, like the Mercedes-Benz GLC and Land Rover Discovery Sport. Let's see how these SUVs stand against each other.

Dimensions

With a length of 4,657mm, the BMW is the longest SUV. While the Mercedes lags behind by just 1mm, the Land Rover is 58mm shorter than the BMW. The Mercedes has the longest wheelbase (2,873mm), the BMW stands 2nd, while the Land Rover has the smallest wheelbase (2,741mm). However, the Land Rover is the tallest (1,724mm) and widest (2,173 mm) SUV of the three. It also has a whopping 981 litres of boot space with its third row of seats folded, as against the 550 litres offered by the BMW and Merc. The BMW is the lightest among the three with a 1845kg gross weight, while the Mercedes and Land Rover have a gross weight of 1871kg and 2505kg, respectively.

Performance

All three SUVs are powered by a 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine. While the X3 and GLC develop 245PS of power, the Discovery is slightly less powerful at 240PS. The Discovery also has the least amount of torque: 340Nm, while the X3 and GLC have 350Nm and 370Nm, respectively. Both the X3 and the GLC reach the 100kmph mark from standstill in just 6.5 seconds, while the Discovery takes 8.2 seconds. At 230kmph, the X3 has the highest top speed. This might be because the X3 is the lightest among the three. The GLC and Discovery have a top speed of 222kmph and 199kmph, respectively. The X3 has an eight-speed automatic transmission while a nine-speed automatic gearbox does its duty in the GLC and Discovery.

Features

Belonging to the same luxury segment, all three SUVS are loaded with similar features, and you simply can't pick one in this category. They come equipped with all the latest features, like Panoramic sunroof, electrically adjustable seats, ambient lighting and leather upholstery. All of them have four-wheel–drive drivetrain.

The BMW X3 is a more driver-focused car. It is the lightest and has the highest top speed, making it a fun-to-drive SUV. However, in terms of practicality, the Land Rover Discovery Sport seems more favourable. Despite being the heaviest and the slowest, it has the biggest boot and is also available in a seven-seater configuration, and one can't overlook the Land-Rover's Terrain Response system. The flexibility of going anywhere, knowing that your car can handle the terrain is what you need in a true SUV. As for the Mercedes-Benz GLC, it is the newest and most value-for-money car here. Though cheaper by almost 5 lakh than the other two SUVs, it is a generation ahead and offers most of the equipment that the others provide. Stay tuned for a comprehensive, head-to-head review.
