The Volkswagen T-Cross is closely related to the Taigun sold in the Indian market

Volkswagen has revealed the near-production model of the new T-Cross compact SUV, which is closely related to the Volkswagen Taigun offered in India. The two models have nearly identical designs in the rear and sides, and their cabins are quite similar too. Given their shared elements, it seems like the facelifted Taigun could feature design and feature updates inspired by the newly revealed T-Cross. Here’s everything that’s new on the global SUV::

Exterior Design

The biggest design change for the new T-Cross is the revised front fascia that looks sportier with the vertical LEDs in the new bumper. Volkswagen could carry forward the same changes to the India-spec Taigun but might still offer a market-specific bumper design. The profile looks more or less the same apart from the alloy wheels, which will also likely be different in the Taigun facelift. The rear profile of the T-Cross has a new light signature for the connected LED tail lamps, which can also be carried forward in the Taigun facelift.

Interior Styling

The cabin of the new T-Cross does not look much different from the current Taigun, but there are some minor changes. The dashboard looks reworked and layered, now featuring a free-standing 9.2-inch touchscreen infotainment instead of the 10-inch unit that sits integrated into the dashboard of the Taigun.

The carmaker has also added more soft-touch materials inside the cabin of the new T-Cross which may also be a part of the facelifted SUV.

More Standard Features

Volkswagen hasn’t added any new features to the T-Cross but has made a lot of them available from the base-spec model. Features like LED headlights, LED tail lamps, a 360-degree camera, road sign display, digital driver’s display and a touchscreen infotainment system are now offered as standard on the new T-Cross.

With the facelifted Taigun, we can expect Volkswagen to add some of these as standard equipment to the compact SUV. We’ve seen a similar approach of a well-equipped model with a high starting price with the Volkswagen Virtus sedan.

Better Safety

The Taigun is already the safest compact SUV in India with its 5-star safety rating in both Global NCAP and Latin NCAP. However, we do not get any driver assistance systems on the India-spec model. The new T-Cross is equipped with ADAS features like lane-keep assist, adaptive cruise control and auto emergency braking, which we can expect on the facelifted Taigun.

These features on the India-spec Taigun facelift would also bring it up to speed with rivals that already offer ADAS technology, like the MG Astor, Kia Seltos facelift and Honda Elevate.

Same Powertrains

Even with the new T-Cross, Volkswagen has not revealed any changes to the powertrain option. The carmaker will likely be using the same pair of TSI engines and transmissions which are already present on the current Taigun.

Volkswagen had only recently localised its 1-litre and 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engines for its India lineup based on the MQB A0 IN platform. They’re both offered with a 6-speed manual as standard; the smaller engine gets the choice of a 6-speed torque converter automatic, and the bigger unit gets an optional 7-speed dual-clutch automatic.

The new T-Cross will hit the international market by early 2024 and Volkswagen could introduce the facelifted Taigun in India by the end of 2024. It will likely carry a premium over the current Taigun which is priced between Rs 11.62 lakh and Rs 19.46 lakh (ex-showroom).
