Toyota  has showcased its 4th generation Prius at the 2015 IAA in Frankfurt yesterday. The car featured a complete style overhaul, which seem to be reminiscent of the Japanese shodo with certain origami-esque style cues.  The 2016 Toyota Prius is based on the company’s new global modular architecture dubbed ‘TNGA,’. The platform is relatively stiffer and comparatively lighter than the previous generation model. The new car also comes in a bigger package and its length has been increased by 60 mm and the width has been treated with another 15 mm. To enhance the aerodynamics, the height of the new Prius has been reduced by 20 mm.

The fourth-generation Prius comes with the updated Hybrid Synergy Drive powertrain, which has been tweaked to deliver improved fuel efficiency and lower emissions. The fuel-economy has been enhanced by 18%. The electric motor in the new car is substantially smaller than the one incorporated in the previous generation. The car features batteries that have been improved to provide better range. Prius’s thermal efficiency has been bumped all the way up to 40 percent and is now regarded as the global benchmark for gasoline engine. The previous generation featured a gasoline efficiency of 38%.

On the safety front, Prius holds its ground rather well, thanks to Toyota’s Safety Sense. This feature comprises of active safety features like Lane Departure Alert, Automatic High Beam, Road Sign Assist, Radar-Governed Adaptive Cruise Control and Pedestrian recognition capability.
