Toyota Prius Prime Showcased at the 2016 New York Auto Show
Toyota has finally unveiled the next generation of its most recognised flagship hybrid car – the Toyota Prius Prime – at the 2016 New York Motor Show. The new car is longer and wider than its predecessor and is almost 40 per cent more efficient. This is to say that the new Prius Prime can achieve 84 mph on electric alone mode and comes with a 31 mile range for the same mode.

With a client list that includes the likes of Leonardo DiCaprio, Cameron Diaz and other Hollywood A-listers, it was no surprise that everyone was eager to get a glimpse of the next-generation Toyota Prius. Putting an end to the anticipation, the Japanese automaker finally unveiled the next generation of its most recognised flagship hybrid car – the Toyota Prius Prime – at the 2016 New York Motor Show.
As far as the aesthetic updates are concerned, the all-new Toyota Prius Prime features a much more conventional front facade, which aims to bestow it with a sportier overall appeal. To do so, the new car gets LED headlamps and features a design approach that seems similar to the company’s Mirai hydrogen fuel cell car. Toyota Mirai was showcased at the recently culminated 2016 Indian Auto Expo last month, alongside the previous generation Toyota Prius. The new car also happens to be longer and wider than its predecessor, which may translate into more cabin space for the occupants.
Toyota has refrained from disclosing the overall kerb weight of the car, but claims that it has made the new Prius 40 per cent more efficient than its predecessor. The car is capable of achieving 135 kmph on electric-only mode, and has a range of 50 kms until the battery discharges completely.
To make the new Prius Prime this efficient, Toyota has improved the aerodynamics to compensate for the increase in weight, which comes as a result of the longer and wider body. The new Prius also gets an automatic radiator which, when cooling is not required, shuts its vents in order to further enhance the aerodynamics. There is also a solar panel on the roof, which charges the battery using sunlight.
All these features lend the new Prius Prime an aerodynamic drag coefficient of as low as 0.2 that helps the same (albeit improved) 1.8-litre petrol power plant deliver a combined fuel efficiency of around 85.5 kmpl (claimed).
