Rod tax on luxury cars to be increased three fold
Buying a new car in national capital will soon become expensive as the one-time road tax or registration fee imposed on new four-wheelers is all set to be raised in the state of Delhi. The transport department of the Delhi government is bringing a Cabinet proposal related to increase in the road tax on the new vehicles, with special focus on luxury cars. It is expected that the proposal will be discussed in the Cabinet meeting, scheduled to be held on Monday.

On the cars priced below Rs 4 lakh like Maruti Alto, Maruti Eeco, Chevrolet Spark, Tata Indica, Maruti Zen, the minimum road tax to be proposed is four per cent as compared to the existing road tax of 2 percent on this price segment. The cars priced above Rs 1 crore like BMW M series, Porsche, Mercedes Benz SL Class, Audi A-8, Rolls Royce Ghost, Lamborghini Gallardo Coupe, are proposed to be attracting the road tax of 12 per cent on the car priced above Rs one crore, as against existing rate of 4 percent. The Delhi government has generated revenue over Rs 530 crore from registration of new vehicles.
Currently, there are two slabs of the road tax in the capital including the minimum of two per cent for cars costing up to Rs four lakh and the maximum of four per cent for cars costing more than Rs four lakh. The Delhi government has generated revenue over Rs 530 crore from registration of new vehicles. The road tax in state of Delhi is minimum in the country, where about 600 new cars add to the Capital road daily.
