2023 MG Hector Strong Hybrid Concept Showcased - India Launch Expected?

• The Wuling Almaz, which is basically the MG Hector underneath, has been showcased with a strong-hybrid powertrain in Indonesia. 

• The strong hybrid isn’t based on the existing 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine, but rather a new one. 

• Technical specifications haven’t been revealed yet. 

• The facelifted Hector is unlikely to get this strong-hybrid engine, but we could see it sometime next year. 

Wuling Motors has showcased the strong-hybrid concept version of the Almaz SUV at the Indonesia Electric Motor Show (IEMS) 2022. The SUV is basically the Indonesian version of the MG Hector with just some changes inside and out. 

The Almaz (Hector) strong-hybrid has been equipped with a new 2-litre petrol engine that gets two electric motors and a lithium-ion battery pack. The technical specifications are not out yet, but reports suggest that they will be revealed once the car is launched in October. Currently, the Hector gets a 1.5-litre mild-hybrid petrol engine in India, with a 6-speed manual transmission. 

MG is planning to launch the facelifted Hector in India soon. It will get some visual changes inside and out with new features. No powertrain changes are expected with this update. So, the strong-hybrid powertrain is unlikely to make it to this version. Instead, we could see it sometime next year.

Currently, there are three mass-market strong hybrid cars on sale in India: the Maruti Grand Vitara, the Toyota Hyryder, and the Honda City e:HEV. All of them get a 1.5-litre petrol engine paired with a battery pack with self-charging capabilities. While the Grand Vitara and Hyryder claim to deliver 27.97kmpl, the City’s efficiency is rated at 26.5kmpl.
