Mahindra is known for its rugged SUV models and remains one of the few models to still offer diesel engines with most of its lineup. Like most carmakers, Mahindra has also started developing its electric cars portfolio with battery-powered SUVs. However, its approach towards the electrified future is unlike other carmakers.

The Expected EV-ICE Demand

In its FY23 investor meeting, Rajesh Jejurikar, Executive Director of Mahindra’s Auto and Farm sector stated that the carmaker is expecting that for the next 6 to 7 years (up to 2030), 70 per cent of its total demand will be coming from its internal combustion engine (ICE) models. To meet these demands, Mahindra will be focusing on keeping an exciting ICE lineup and is even planning to ramp up its production capabilities to help reduce the waiting periods of its popular models.

On the other hand, the upcoming EVs are believed to help in bringing a new set of customers who want a different kind of product other than what Mahindra is currently offering. This way, Mahindra is future-ready without having to shun much of its existing customer base.

Mahindra’s Upcoming Models

Mahindra is working on a couple of new models and generation updates on the ICE front. In 2024, it will launch the 5-door Mahindra Thar, followed by the new generations of the Bolero and the XUV300. Even the popular nameplate, the XUV500 will likely make a comeback as the Hyundai Creta rival and be positioned below the XUV700.

However, many exciting launches are coming on the EV front as well. Starting with the XUV e8 (the electric version of the XUV700) towards the end of 2024, followed by the XUV e9 (the coupe version of the XUV e8). Apart from these two EVs derived from an ICE model, we will also see dedicated EVs developed from the ground up in the carmaker’s Born Electric lineup called the BE 05, BE 07 and BE 09.

Where The Rivals Stand

Considering Mahindra’s current plan for the next 7 years still puts focus towards the development of its ICE lineup, it is taking a different stance towards electrification in India compared to its main rival, Tata.

Already leading the EV revolution in India, Tata has stated that by 2025, it will have 10 electric cars in the lineup. Even now, while the SUV specialist only has one EV in India, the Mahindra XUV400, Tata has launched 3 models to date with more arriving in the next couple of years.
