The GS800 Safari Storme 4x4 is a special model that Tata manufactures for the Indian Armed Forces

Tata recently completed manufacturing of over 1500 Safari Storme SUVs specially designed for the Indian Armed Forces. The carmaker has to deliver 3192 units of the Army-spec Safari Storme to IAF. The specially crafted vehicle is called the GS800 (General Service) Safari Storme 4x4. The figure of '800' in its name represents the minimum payload capacity of 800kg.

Tata claims that the Army-spec Safari Storme's payload capacity is 60 per cent more than the standard model’s. While the carmaker has not revealed the specifications of the GS800, it claims that it delivers 70 per cent higher power and 200 per cent higher torque. For reference, the Tata Safari Storme 4x4 available for sale in India is powered by a 2.2-litre diesel engine that makes 156PS of maximum power and 400Nm of peak torque. The engine is paired with a 6-speed manual transmission. The Army-spec model also features air conditioning, ABS, mobile charging point and power windows.

Previously, Maruti Suzuki used to offer the Gypsy (second-gen Jimny) to the Army. It remains to be seen if the latest fourth-gen Jimny will serve the IAF in the future or not. Maruti Suzuki is yet to launch it in India and we don’t even see it coming until 2020. Read more about it here.
