Can the Duster Turbo petrol manual match its claimed fuel efficiency figure of 16.5kmpl in the real world?

The BS6 norms resulted in the discontinuation of the famed 1.5-litre diesel-powered variants of the Renault Duster. Since then, the compact SUV has been a petrol-only offering that’s offered in three variants. Renault showcased a Turbo variant (with a 1.3-litre turbo-petrol unit) of the SUV at Auto Expo 2020 that landed on our shores in August. It comes with the same engine-gearbox combo offered on its cousin, the Nissan Kicks. We tested this powerful turbocharged variant of the Duster with the 6-speed manual gearbox and here’s what the numbers reveal:

Engine Displacement

1.3-litre Turbo-petrol Manual

Power

156PS

Torque

254Nm

Transmission

6-speed MT

Claimed fuel efficiency

16.5kmpl

Tested fuel efficiency (city)

12.02kmpl

Tested fuel efficiency (highway)

15.51kmpl

The Renault Duster Turbo manual was unable to match its claimed fuel efficiency figure in the city as well as on the highway in our tests, but it wasn’t far off at least when it comes to highway efficiency.

Let’s see how it performed in mixed driving scenarios:

Mileage

City:Highway (50:50)

City:Highway (25:75)

City:Highway (75:25)

13.54kmpl

14.46kmpl

12.73kmpl

If you use the Duster Turbo petrol manual majorly in the city, expect it to return an average mileage of 13kmpl. In case your major usage of the SUV involves travelling outside the city, the overall efficiency should go up by around 2kmpl. For those whose commute is equally split between the city and highway, the fuel efficiency could hover around 13kmpl.

While these figures are indicative, they are bound to change depending on the road, climate and car conditions along with the vehicle’s health. If you own a Duster Turbo petrol manual, do share your findings with us in the comments.

We own the turbo CVT version of the Duster and it's only been a week now. The avg. mileage shows 8kmpl as of now in miderate to low city traffic. I'm hoping for the numbers to go up after the service.
