The Audi Q7 will be the first model from the house of VW Group to offer a plug-in hybrid diesel powertrain. If media reports are to be believed, Audi will launch the updated Q7 with new engine options. The automaker will introduce petrol and diesel engine along with a plug-in diesel option which will be sold in Europe and U.S by next year. With the introduction of plug-in hybrid diesel, the automaker will have an edge over its contemporary rivals Mercedes-Benz and BMW.

In Europe, Audi Q7 will be second vehicle to offer plug-in hybrid diesel powertrain after the very popular Volvo V60 which made its debut last year and since than the company has retailed more than 10,000 units. Earlier this year, Audi development boss Ulrich Hackenberg revealed the company’s desire to beat its German rivals in market with a plug-in diesel.

He also said the A8 and Q7 would get a plug-in diesel variants but stopped short of confirming which model would be first. He said the drivetrain will combine a 3.0-liter V-6 diesel and an electric motor. Audi CEO Rupert Stadler also is bullish on the powertrain and said “We strongly believe in plug-in hybrids."

Audi believes plug-ins are the best solution for low-emission vehicles because they don't face the same range constraints as battery-powered vehicles.
