The Indian government is making a policy which will encourage production of Hybrid cars in India via excise duty concessions. It will greatly protect the environment and will help in reducing India's fuel dependence. Heavy Industries and Public Enterprises Minister Praful Patel will be submitting the proposal. Other than this the government will also look forward to develop and research for the hybrid auto mobiles.

For developing the hybrid cars, the company needs to be upgraded with the laboratory skills. The ministry will also be looking for the approval of the high level panel issue. If things fall into places, the panel will come out with clear cut policy by the month of September.

The Hybrid cars run on both conventional fuel and electrically charged battery which are imported as of now. These cars come with a heavy price tag of more than 25 per cent than the regular cars.

Toyota Prius Hybrid that is imported in India comes with a price tag of more than Rs. 25 lakh. Honda also launched its Honda Civic Hybrid car model which is priced at Rs 21.5 lakh, the price slashed to Rs 13.36 lakh but since then, it has stopped selling in India.

The government concern is over how to reduce the price of the car at feasible levels. Also it is working at the levels where it will assess the infrastructure availability and the promotion it requires in the domestic auto market. The hybrid technology is a great success in the US, Japanese and European auto markets.

Hybrid cars are the need of the hour. Time is running out as pollution is spiralling out of control. Even the small towns are hit by smog and it is surprising there is a specific, currently dormant, ministry in the government responsible for acting on issues like these. I appreciate Mr. Praful Patel to come up with the plan of tax relaxation for hybrid cars. In india the A segment car is the largest selling segment. The A segment cars are expected to come with a decent fuel efficiency and low maintenance expenses. The concept of applying hybrid technology in this segment would certainly benefit both the buyer as well as the car maker as it saves fuel for the buyer as well as cuts down maintenance costs; and as far as the car maker is concerned the segment will certainly see a boom. If Maruti or Hyundai could come up with at least a partly hybrid version with an affordable price tag on it, then it will be a win-win situation. City driving requires less power and a battery operated mode would be idle for the vehicle, while on highways and other lanes the car can be powered by conventional fuels. Adopting the start-stop technology along with the hybrid technology is also a good option.
