Only three made-in-India cars have received a 5-star rating so far and all three are from Indian carmakers

Global NCAP crash test

The Global NCAP has been testing Indian cars for a while now under its #SafeCarsForIndia campaign. While there have been disappointing results in the past, cars sold in India have upped their safety game in recent years. The Tata Altroz, for instance, got a 5-star rating earlier this year. Here is a list of other made-in-India cars that have received a decent rating (more than 3 stars) in the Global NCAP crash test.

Before we dive into the detailed list, here is a table depicting the safety rating. Here ‘Good’ is the highest rating while ‘Poor’ being the lowest.

  • All the cars here have a 3-star rating in adult safety but it’s the Aspire that has the highest score.

  • Ertiga has the highest score in child occupant safety. While the Aspire and Seltos scored 15 points out of 49, the Duster scored 17.75. The Ertiga has the highest score since it is the only car here to offer ISOFIX child seat anchors as standard.

  • Head protection in Aspire and Ertiga is rated good for both the driver and co-driver. However, it is surprisingly rated adequate for the most expensive car here, the Seltos. The Duster, though, is a mixed bag with adequate protection for the driver and good for the co-driver.

  • Neck protection in all the cars is rated good for both the driver and co-driver.

  • Chest protection is rated marginal for the driver and good for the co-driver in both the Seltos and Ertiga. It is rated weak for the driver and marginal for the co-driver in the Duster and the Aspire.

  • Thigh protection is rated marginal for all the cars in this comparison.

  • The bodyshell and footwell of all the cars here have been rated unstable.
