General Motors India to Launch up to 8 Models in next 5-6 Years
The American auto maker General Motors' Indian arm is aiming to launch about 8 new models in the Indian auto market over the next 5-6 years to increase its market share. The company is also planning to double the production capacity of its Talegaon plant in Maharashtra so to fill the demand of its new cars. Moreover, the company is also planning to export small diesel engines from India.
Speaking to PTI, General Motors India's Vice President-Manufacturing, Rakesh Mohan Sabbarwal said, "Lots of new models are coming up for the Indian market. We are discussing about 7-8 models over the next 5-6 years," However he refused to share the entire details that what all segments the company will be targeting.
Commenting on the company's produciton plans, he said: "We are currently in discussion for ramping up the capacity. In the second phase of expansion, the capacity of the Talegaon plant can be doubled, but nothing has been decided yet." And like we informed our readers already that GM India will launch three cars by end of this year, the Sail U-VA hatchback, Sail Sedan and Chevrolet Enjoy MPV. Out of which Sail U-VA will be rolled out by end of this month, rest two will come in December.
Talking about the diesel engine exports, Sabbarwal said, "We have received requests from some of GM's operations in other countries to supply powertrains from here... We are under discussion." He also said that the company has already received requests to export 1.0-litre and 1.3-litre diesel engine that are manufactured at the company's facility.
