Vitara Brezza is Maruti Suzuki’s first-ever sub-4m compact SUV

A new product from Maruti Suzuki is always intriguing. Now, since the Vitara Brezza is the first vehicle to be wholly developed by the Japanese automaker's Indian counterpart, the curiosity went up a notch. Maruti Suzuki has managed to undercut the prices of its arch rivals, the Ford EcoSport and the Mahindra TUV300. There are reports indicating that the Vitara Brezza has received over 2,600 bookings in 24 hours, and if you’re planning to get one for yourself, here’s everything you need to know about this sub-4m SUV.

Mechanicals

Vitara Brezza Specs

Fiat borrowed 1.3-litre diesel – Suzuki DDiS200, power – 90 PS at 4000 rpm, torque – 200 Nm at 1750 rpm, 5-Speed MT, Mileage – 24.3 kmpl, Ground Clearance – 198 mm.

Now the Vitara’s kerb weight is between 1170 and 1195 kilos, making the Vitara Brezza the lightest vehicle in its segment, with almost equivalent power. So we believe that it won’t feel lethargic or sluggish and, for that matter, this engine is already pulling the relatively heavier Ertiga.

Design

Vitara Brezza

In spite of being under 4 metres in length, the Vitara Brezza has none of the quirks the Mahindra TUV300 carries. It looks decent and the design tends to grow on you. Like the Swift, it has a floating roof and to make it a little more flamboyant, Maruti Suzuki also offers contrasting shades with the Vitara Brezza's top-end ZDi+ trim. The exteriors have several segment-first features, such as the projector headlamps featuring LED guide lights and wraparound taillamps with LED elements. It offers slightly squarish wheel arches and the 16-inch wheels are standard across the range.

Dimensions and Tyres

Vitara Brezza Dimensions

The Vitara Brezza gets 16-inch wheels across variants. The ZDi and ZDi+ offer the fattest tyres in the segment – 215/60R16 rubber wrapped around gunmetal-grey alloy wheels. The rest of the trims get 205/60R16 tyres shod on steel wheels. The standard alloys are twin-5 spoke, while the personalised versions get a different set of alloys. The EcoSport too gets 16-inch wheels, but the 15-inchers on the TUV300 look small.

Interiors

Like its exteriors, the cabin also features a lot of segment-first features. To begin with, it comes with a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay support and MirrorLink Connectivity. The instrument cluster offers 7-step illumination control with 5 mood lights. Unlike the TUV300, it comes with an automatic climate control. Moreover, several cabin parts are lifted from the Maruti Suzuki's part bin, such as the steering wheel, power window switches, ORVM controls, and others. What we really like is how uncluttered the entire layout is. It takes no time for one to get used to what's what.

Infotainment System

Vitara Brezza

The Brezza offers Suzuki’s 7-inch SmartPlay touchscreen infotainment system, featuring Apple CarPlay support, MirrorLink Connectivity and App integration. The system also provides a display for the reverse parking camera and offers navigation as well. The touchscreen unit is shared with the Baleno and the S-Cross. It is important to note that the Brezza is the only one in the segment to feature a touchscreen infotainment system.

Boot Space

Vitara Brezza

It offers 328 litres of boot space, which can be extended with flip and 60:40 folding rear seats and like the Honda Jazz, in its brochures, Maruti is showcasing that it can accommodate a bicycle. However, the boot space falls short of both the Ford Ecosport (346 litres) and the Mahindra TUV300 (384 litres).

Safety

The Vitara Brezza offers standard driver airbags across its variants, while passenger airbags and ABS with EBD are optional, starting from the base. It is the only vehicle in its class to offer a standard driver’s airbag. While safety features are more or less available only in top trims of the EcoSport, Mahindra offers Dual Airbags and ABS with EBD across all trims.
