The performance variant of Audi's hot-selling luxury SUV, the SQ7 is finally making its way to India. Sources suggest that the SUV will be launched in the coming months. The asking price is expected to hover around the Rs 1 crore mark, ex-showroom.

At that price, we think it makes for a fantastic buying proposition. What you get over and above a standard Q7 are a few visual tweaks on the outside and a monster under the bonnet. The 3.0-litre motor is given the boot for a 4.0-litre V8 engine that belts out a massive 435PS of power and a gargantuan 900Nm of torque.

For the record, the SQ7 is the most powerful diesel SUV in the world. Now, it isn't the first time that Audi has plonked a massive diesel engine in the Q7: Earlier generations of the Q7 used to get a V12 diesel option (yes, you read that right). What's interesting to note is that the new V8 betters the old V12 not only in terms of measurable performance, but also efficiency and emissions. It features an electric-powered compressor (EPC), that kicks in the lower revs (when the twin turbos are snoozing), helping to minimize turbo lag and, needless to mention, aid performance. This translates into a 0-100kmph dash in just 4.8 seconds and a top whack nothing short of 250kmph.

Visual differentiators include a different set of alloy wheels, dabs of matte silver on the bumpers and quad exhausts. Since this is an 'S' version, there is nothing over the top and nothing bonkers like the 'RS' models. The crazy blue colour does come pretty close though. The insides are typical Q7, which means you continue to get the practical three rows of seating, usable cubby holes and a thoughtful dashboard layout that is easy to use and get used to. Audi has ditched the wood panelling, for matte silver, which is in line with the overall 'S' theme. Other trademark Audi goodies such as the virtual cockpit and the Bang & Olufsen sound system find a spot on the SQ7 as well.

We think the SQ7 makes for a great addition to the Audi lineup. As always, the German auto giant will be aggressive with its pricing. There isn't a performance-oriented diesel SUV in the market either. Bring it on, Audi!
