The 2021 S-Class is a major step up from the current-gen model thanks to design updates, new powertrain options, and added features

  • The S-Class gets 3.0-litre inline-six petrol and diesel engines assisted by 48V mild-hybrid tech.

  • The new S-Class will be bigger than the current model in every dimension with sleeker looks and restyled elements.

  • It comes loaded to the gills with features like augmented reality, level 3 autonomous tech, adaptive ambient lighting and more.

  • The new S-Class is expected to launch in 2021 and arrive in India the same year.

Mercedes-Benz has unveiled the next-gen S-Class. The luxury sedan has got some major upgrades, both cosmetic and mechanical, adding to the ‘luxury’ aspect. The question is, what makes the upcoming S-Class more special than the current one? Here are five reasons:

Luxury Personified

The S-Class gets not one, not two, but FIVE displays inside. It consists of three digital displays at the rear and a massive 12.8-inch touchscreen infotainment system with the latest version of the MBUX interface. The driver’s display also comes in full 3D view and is the fifth and final display in the car. The centre console has no control buttons and is fully operational through the infotainment system. Minimalism is the middle name of luxury, right?

Familiar Yet New Design

Mercedes-Benz has stretched the S-Class by 54mm, raised it by 10mm, widened it by 55mm, extended the wheelbase by 71mm, and that’s just the standard wheelbase model. The longer wheelbase model gets an added 34mm of length, 12mm of height and 51mm of extended wheelbase.

The S-Class now looks sleeker thanks to the new headlamps with Digital Light system, wraparound tail lights with a cyberpunk pattern, and the redesigned alloy wheels ranging from 18- to 21-inches. Thanks, in part to the new design, the S-Class also is one of the most aerodynamically efficient cars, featuring a drag coefficient of just 0.22.

What’s Luxury Without Features?

First off, the MBUX system can save up to seven custom settings for passengers and the driver’s seat. If you own another Merc with the same system, the settings can also be transferred. Next up is the Energising Comfort Control which can act as your personal trainer based on data received from your smartwatch or smartphone such as stress levels, age, and sleep patterns. There’s a lot more the S-Class can do by itself with Level 3 autonomous tech, like help you park your car for starters.

Heard of augmented reality? The S-Class’ head-up display features AR to control the navigation system and gesture controls for opening and closing the sunroof. Ambient lighting works hand in hand with blind-spot assist for collision warning. Feel like a kid who just wants to play around in this car yet?

Powertrain Options For Days

Despite already being spoilt for choice, the S-Class has some more upcoming options to add to the fray. Existing options consist of 3.0-litre inline-six petrol and diesel engines with the petrol engines also getting the option of 48V mild-hybrid assistance. The petrol engine produces 367PS/500Nm by itself and 435PS/520Nm with the mild-hybrid. The diesel engine, on the other hand, produces 286PS/600Nm and 330PS/700Nm. EQ boost exclusive to the petrol variants gives an extra 21PS of power. All models have a top speed of 250 kmph with the fastest 0-100 kmph time recorded in 4.9 seconds.

Future Of Futuristic?

Mercedes-Benz EQS

A V8 engine and a plug-in hybrid capable of providing a range of 100 km are set to join the lineup next, followed by the all-electric EQS with a 700km range along with the AMG and Maybach versions.

The current model retails at Rs 1.38 crore in India and locks horns with the BMW 7 Series and Audi A8. We can expect the next generation to hit our shores by 2021 with a price tag of about Rs 1.4 crore.
