Will The 140PS Tata Harrier Co-Exist With 170PS Version?

The Tata Harrier is powered by a 2.0-litre diesel engine, the same unit that powers the Jeep Compass. The engine makes a maximum power of 140PS under the Harrier’s hood, which is 33PS less than what it produces on the Compass. At launch, and till now, the Harrier’s diesel engine could be had with just a manual transmission, a 6-speed unit. But the Harrier will soon get more powertrain options.

Tata had confirmed to CarDekho even before the Harrier was launched that it would introduce a Hyundai-sourced 6-speed automatic transmission on the diesel-powered SUV in mid-2019. While the carmaker is yet to confirm the output of the diesel-automatic powertrain, it’s been speculated that it would feature the uprated 170-odd PS diesel engine.

Apart from offering the diesel-automatic combination, Tata will obviously upgrade the 2.0-litre engine in due course of time to meet the more stringent BS6 emission norms, which will come into effect from 1 April 2020. It’s also being said that only the 170PS version of this engine will graduate to BS6 standards, but it’s worth noting that the 2.0-litre engine in 140PS state of tune meets the Euro 6.2 emission standard and is already available on the Jeep Renegade in Europe.

If Tata chooses to discontinue the 140PS Harrier, it may disappoint early Harrier buyers (and even those who’re planning to buy it now) who had no other option but to go for the under-rated engine. The discontinuation of the 140PS version may also impact its value in the pre-owned car market.

In such a scenario, Tata might just choose to keep the 140PS version of this engine alive with the 6-speed manual transmission in some (lower) variants if not all. Meanwhile, Tata could offer higher variants with the manual transmission and those with the automatic transmission with the more powerful 170PS tune. In short, if the Harrier fits your budget at its current prices and you do not wish to stretch your budget further for a more powerful version or an automatic transmission, you should go ahead with your purchase.
