Say hello to the Aventador S. The mid-life makeover for Lamborghini's flagship gets some visual tweaks, upgraded firepower, and some more tech to top it off.

For most petrolheads, big V12 Lamborghinis have always been bedroom wall posters, and the Aventador didn't disappoint on that front. The 'S' kicks things up a notch, building on the aggressive design. Updates include a redesigned front bumper, as well as a new rear bumper that houses a massive black diffuser. Our favourite bit, however, has to be the three exhaust pipes that sit slap bang in the centre of the rear, while being 20 per cent lighter compared to the exhaust on its predecessor.

The changes aren't the result of the designer's whims, though. "Every modified component is redesigned for a purpose, achieving maximum aerodynamic efficiency while accenting the Aventador's complex, muscular dynamism," says Lamborghini. For instance, the new front improves downforce by over 130 per cent. The reworked tail section coupled with the active rear wing improves downforce by 50 per cent in its 'optimum' position and over 400 per cent when in 'low drag' mode. There's a lesson in balancing function and form right there.

The interiors remain virtually unchanged, save for the addition of a new TFT display (with new graphics) in place of the instrument cluster. As you'd expect you can customise the insides in a million ways, by ringing up Lamborghini's 'Ad Personam' division. There's a special 'S-Trim' for the interiors too, that's exclusive to the new addition to the lineup.

The Aventador S retains the mammoth 6.5-litre V12 engine, that now belts out 740PS of power and 690Nm of torque. That is just 10PS shy off the Aventador SV, but the torque remains identical. The mid-mounted twelve-cylinder screamer rockets it from 0-100kmph in just 2.9 seconds (0.1 seconds slower than the SV) and gives it a top whack of 350kmph. All that power is harnessed by Lamborghini's 7-speed gearbox and is duly sent to all four wheels.

What's interesting, is that for the first time ever, a production-spec Lamborghini features four-wheel steering. At low speeds, the rear wheels turn in the opposite direction compared to the front, giving it a tighter turning radius. Conversely, they turn in the same direction at higher speeds, aiding stability. The usual driving modes - STRADA, SPORT, and CORSA - are available with the Aventador S. Lamborghini has also added a new 'EGO' mode in the drive select that lets the driver set up steering, suspension and engine individually.

The Aventador S is up for grabs across global markets and deliveries begin in spring 2017. As far as India goes, we've got word that Lamborghini's updated flagship will make its official debut here in April next year. Prices are expected to hover around the Rs 5.5 crore mark.
