Tata Safari Diesel Automatic Fuel Efficiency: Claimed vs Real

Published On Jul 30, 2021 08:00 AM By Rohit for Tata Safari 2021-2023

The Safari AT has a claimed fuel efficiency of 14.08kmpl. But can it stay true to the claimed figure in real-world driving conditions?

After launching the third-gen Safari in February 2021, Tata recently rolled out the 10,000th unit of the SUV from its Pune facility. It is essentially a three-row version of the Harrier with increased length and height and comes in both 6- and 7-seater layouts. Like the Harrier, the Safari is also a diesel-only model that gets a 2-litre motor (170PS/350Nm), coupled with either a 6-speed manual or automatic transmission. We had the Safari with the automatic gearbox and here’s what its numbers revealed:

Engine Displacement

2-litre diesel

Power

170PS

Torque

350Nm

Transmission

6-speed AT

Claimed fuel efficiency

14.08kmpl

Tested fuel efficiency (City)

9.96kmpl

Tested fuel efficiency (Highway)

16.99kmpl

The Safari AT fell short by over 4kmpl to match its claimed fuel efficiency in the city, but it surpassed the claimed figure by nearly 3kmpl on the highway.

Based on the results from our mileage test from city and highway driving conditions, we’ve estimated how it would perform in mixed driving conditions:

Mileage

City:Highway (50:50)

City:Highway (25:75)

City:Highway (75:25)

12.55kmpl

14.44kmpl

11.10kmpl

If the majority of your usage is restricted to the city, expect the Safari AT to deliver a mileage of around 11kmpl. For those who use their SUV mostly on wider stretches of roads, the fuel efficiency should go up by around 3kmpl. In case your commute is split equally between the city and highway, the Safari automatic’s mileage could hover around 12kmpl.

It is important to note that fuel efficiency depends on a combination of driving conditions, the car’s condition as well as your driving style, so your experience may vary from ours. If you own a Safari AT, feel free to share your findings with us in the comments.

I enjoy the ride. However the right piller is hindering the vision during right turn. Fullscreen for Gmap not possible. Sound system is quite good. City mileage is below 10 kmpl.
