Renault India will soon launch new products based on the company’s Common Module Family-Architecture (CMF-A) platform that it shares with Nissan, informed Renault India CEO Sumit Sawhney recently. The Kwid was the French carmaker’s first car based on this structure.

The CMF-A platform, which can be used to make cars up to four metre in length, will also be used to manufacture innovative products that are game-changers in the respective segments, Sawhney told the Times of India.

“Renault India will roll out one new car every year. Several of them will be new global cars that are designed in India and based on the CMF-A platform as 70 percent of the Indian passenger car market comprises sub-4 metre cars,” he added.

This recent turn of events following Renault top boss Carlos Ghosn’s remarks about a new sedan at the 2016 New York Motor Show has only strengthened the belief that a sub-4 metre sedan could be the next instalment in Renault’s CMF-A saga.

The compact sedan is expected to be powered by a 1.0-litre 3-cylinder engine which, according to the carmaker, will soon feature on the Kwid too. Looking good for around 70PS of power, the engine would come mated to a 5-speed gearbox.

Like the Kwid, expect the car to be among the least expensive ones in its segment. It would lock horns against the likes of the upcoming smaller sedans like Tata Kite 5 and the Chevrolet Beat Essentia Concept-based sedan, if General Motors decides to send it into production.

Piggybacking on the CMF-A-based Kwid’s success, Renault has climbed up to become 2016’s fifth largest car manufacturer in the country, a dramatic rise from ninth in 2014.

One of the key reasons for the success of the CMF-A platform is its high level of localisation. This helps Renault price its products competitively while investing the saved money elsewhere – on loading it with features and making it aesthetically more pleasing.
