MG Hector Petrol-AT Fuel Efficiency: Claimed vs Real

The MG Hector comes with petrol, petrol-hybrid and diesel powertrain options but only the petrol is available with a dual-clutch transmission (DCT) automatic. Prices for the petrol-automatic Hector start at Rs 15.28 lakh (ex-showroom India) making it the most affordable mid-size SUV with an automatic gearbox. The claimed ARAI fuel efficiency figures of this particular powertrain are the lowest when compared to the petrol and petrol-hybrid equipped with the 6-speed manual. It goes without saying that the diesel variant is the most frugal.

The carmaker has currently stopped accepting bookings for the Hector to deal with the high demand. But we recently had the chance to test the SUV’s petrol-DCT variant to measure its fuel efficiency in the real world. Here are the engine specs and the results:

Here’s how the MG Hector petrol-automatic performs in mixed driving conditions:

The Hector petrol-AT wasn’t able to deliver its claimed efficiency figures in neither the city nor the highway. In the city, its fuel efficiency was a significant 5.35kmpl lower than the claimed figure. On the highway, the figures improved, but it was lower than the claimed figure by 1.71kmpl. It is important to note that the claimed figures are recorded under controlled conditions, while in contrast we test the cars on actual roads with traffic.

In case your regular commute is mostly in the city and partly on the highway, then the average fuel efficiency will be a little over 9kmpl. In the opposite scenario, the MG Hector petrol-DCT’s efficiency figure goes up to around 11kmpl. If your regular use involves an equal balance of both city and highway mileage, the Hector’s AT variant will deliver around 10kmpl.
