Maruti and Ford’s smaller engines meant to circumvent the price rise of Petrol

Fitting small engines in larger sedans has become more of a trend these days, as they help in emission control and fuel efficiency, thus perform alike big car engines. Many auto giants in India have been working on this practice for some time now. The upcoming Ford EcoSport has been said to be fitted with the one liter engine, which has the power similar to a 1.6 litre petrol engine. Maruti Ertiga is one such fine example that came powering the 1.2 liter diesel engine, which was used in Swift Dzire previously.

Toyota too did something similar and shared its 1.4 liter diesel engine amongst the super-compact Etios and premium sedan Corolla. So is the case in the Renault’s sedan Fluence and small car Pulse which share the same engine. Michael Boneham, president MD of Ford India reported that the company is adopting measures to increase the fuel efficiency of the engine which will improve 20 percent of the fuel economy and performance. I V Rao, India managing executive officer (engineering) of Maruti Suzuki also added that the smaller engines are being equipped with a turbocharger which gives the same power and torque as the large engines without taking extra energy.

The Maruti Swift Dzire has the same engine as that of Ertiga and SX4 which gives 75 PS power in Dzire and 90 PS power in Ertiga and SX4 who come in the segment of mid-size sedan. The evolution of turbochargers in the petrol engine came a little late, while it existed in the diesel version engines. The trend of the turbochargers in the petrol engine in India is increasing due to the petrol hike in prices. The fuel economy is the whole reason for the sudden shift in the turbo charger petrol engines. These small engines will reduce the prices of the cars.
