The Kia seems to have become an instant hit, trumping both the Brezza and the Venue

The sub-4m SUV segment saw the entry of two new competitors in September. While one wasn’t on the official sales list, the other has jumped straight to the top of the leaderboard. There was much anticipation for the Kia Sonet long before its launch in the second half of the month which might have helped it reach a sales figure of 9,266 units. Its nearest rival was the Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza with 9,153 while its Hyundai Venue cousin recorded just under 8,500 units. Let’s take a look at how all the segment rivals fared in September 2020:

Takeaways:

  • The Kia Sonet was only launched in the second half of September but since the carmaker was already shipping units to meet the pre-order bookings, it recorded the highest sales of the month. More than 9,200 units of the newest offering in the sub-4m SUV segment, skyrocketed it straight to the top of the monthly segment sales.

  • Maruti came a close second with the Vitara Brezza also selling more than 9,000 units in September, recording a month-on-month growth of more than 32 percent.

  • Hyundai sold more units of the Venue in September than it did in August, with a total of 8,469, but it was still the third most popular sub-4m SUV last month.

  • With the launch of the Kia Sonet, the Tata Nexon has slid down to the fourth spot in the segment and it might just have to get used to it. Tata crossed the 6,000-units mark for the Nexon in September which was a month-on-month increase of 16 percent.

Mahindra XUV300 Prices Slashed By Up To Rs 87,000; Is It The Kia Sonet Effect?

  • The Mahindra XUV300 enjoyed a month-on-month growth of nearly 24 percent but was still far behind its more popular rivals with 3,700 units shipped in the same period.

  • Ford’s sub-4m SUV was the least popular in September with just 3,558 units. It is still enjoying a growth period as this figure was a month-on-month improvement of 29 percent.

  • Toyota also launched the Urban Cruiser, the rebadged version of the Maruti Vitara Brezza, in mid-September. However, its numbers were not represented in the monthly SIAM figures. Perhaps, the surge in demand as seen for the Brezza includes the Toyota-badged SUV. We can expect to see representative figures from this month onwards.

  • With the launch of the Kia Sonet and the growth in popularity for the rest of the models, the sub-4m SUV segment experienced a month-on-month overall growth of nearly 54 percent.
