The ‘R’ label stands for ‘Racing’ at Porsche, and it is the only one of the 991 units produced globally to arrive in India.

The limited-run Porsche 911 R has finally arrived in India. The German sportscar maker produced only 991 units of this limited edition, monstrously powerful 911 featuring a manual transmission. It is the country's sole 911 R, and was delivered to a Porsche collector in Bengaluru by Porsche Centre Bengaluru.

The 911 R made its world debut at the 2016 Geneva Motor Show and it pays homage to Porsche's road-homologated racing car from 1967. From its 4.0-litre, naturally aspirated, flat six-cylinder engine, the Porsche 911 R pumps out 500PS of max power and 460Nm of peak torque. The engine is mated to a six-speed manual sports transmission. The nought to 100kmph sprint is achieved in 3.8 seconds and it will keep on accelerating till 323kmph.

Commenting on the arrival, Porsche India’s director, Pavan Shetty said: “The 911 R epitomises the Porsche brand, with the clear design DNA of a classic 911 while performing as a racing car should. The 911 has set the standard for generations after the ground-breaking model was first introduced in the 1960’s. The 911 continues to evolve to new highs and is considered the quintessential sports car - the benchmark for all others. We are thrilled to be introducing the 911 R, a direct descendant from this famed model line, to a valuable, returning customer, who is fortunate enough to have the exclusive ownership of the only 911 R in India.”

As for its exterior, the limited-run 911 R resembles the 911 Carrera, while its rear body, front and rear apron and nose bear similarities to the 911 GT3. Also, the body is comprised of lightweight components that originate from the 911 GT3. All of this resulted in making the R the lightest model of the 911 series (1,370 kg of kerb weight). On the inside, the driver sits in a carbon bucket seat with fabric centre panels. It features a 360mm 'R-specific' GT steering wheel and short gearshift lever to enhance the active driving experience.
