Which SUV tops the segment before two more carmakers join the fray? Let’s find out

The auto industry is still experiencing a rise in sales as the country continues to unlock from the pandemic restrictions. While some carmakers even witnessed a year-on-year increase in their monthly sales, not a single sub-4m SUV was on August's best-seller list. With a couple of new models set to enter the segment in September, let’s take a look at how the current contenders fared in August 2020:

Takeaways

  • Hyundai seems to be the most popular small SUV brand in India at the moment, with the Venue being the highest selling sub-4m SUV in August with more than 8000 units sold. It’s a month-on-month increase of more than 22 per cent.

  • The Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza saw its month-on-month demand slip by over 11 per cent in August. It was the second best-seller with 6903 units sold.

  • The Tata Nexon seems to be doing better than ever as its August market share was nearly 11 per cent higher than what it had been during the same period last year. It’s still a long way off from the segment leaders with 5179 units sold in August 2020.

Ford EcoSport Titanium Automatic Launched At Rs 10.66 Lakh

  • Ford was able to sell 2757 units of the EcoSport in August, which is 13 per cent more than the previous month. It was the least popular offering in this segment for the month.

  • Mahindra has two models in this segment - TUV300 and XUV300 - but only the latter has been on sale since the implementation of the BS6 emission norms in April. It still sells better than the EcoSport with just 2990 units sold, a month-on-month growth of 18.69 per cent.

  • Both the Kia Sonet and Toyota Urban Cruiser are set to be launched in September. The Sonet is expected to have the biggest impact and will be a contender for the top spot in the segment.
