The Japanese marque’s new subcompact SUV is expected to make its way to India in 2023

  • This could be the production version of the SUV RS Concept that was shown in 2021.

  • It appears to have a typical modern Honda SUV design with a crossover’s silhouette.

  • Likely to get the choice of petrol, hybrid and diesel powertrains depending on the market.

  • Expected to offer a premium cabin experience with multiple digital displays and upmarket materials.

  • Official name for this new SUV is yet to be unconfirmed, but could carry the WR-V name in India.

New Honda SUV teaser

Honda is teasing the debut of a new subcompact SUV, likely the production version of the SUV RS Concept showcased in 2021. It will make its global premiere in Indonesia on November 2 before being introduced in other markets, with India likely on the list.

Based on the side profile teased, this new Honda SUV appears to have more of a crossover styling with chunky front and rear bumpers, boxy tail lamps, a tall roofline that slopes aggressively after the C-pillars and a sharp light signature for the LED daytime running lights at the front. It also seems to have decent ground clearance which expands its practicality and gives it more road presence.

Honda 1.2-litre engine

Details on this upcoming SUV are limited, but it will likely get the choice of petrol, diesel and petrol-hybrid powertrains depending on the market. In India, one of the car’s engine options is likely to be the 90PS, 1.2-litre petrol engine found in the Jazz premium hatchback with the choice of manual and CVT transmissions. Honda is unlikely to offer a diesel option for future Indian models.

The new Honda subcompact SUV is expected to offer a set of premium features including a semi-digital driver’s display, ambient lighting and touchscreen infotainment display with connected car features.

While it may get ADAS too in some markets, it is unlikely to be offered on the India-spec model. The subcompact SUV will likely offer a premium cabin experience, offering high levels of fit and finish, soft-touch materials and leatherette upholstery.

While we recognise this upcoming SUV to be a successor to the WR-V, its official moniker is yet to be confirmed. In the extremely likely event of its launch in India next year, Honda may stick with the WR-V badge which has been around long enough to be a recognisable name.
