CNG (compressed natural gas) car models are not a choice of many, despite petrol prices accelerating every fortnight and Government's continuous attempt to promote the CNG run variants as eco friendly cars.

Recently it has been surveyed that CNG is only preferred by 25 per cent of the buyers. As per the study, the buyers have stated environment friendly cars over cost effective cars, the reason for purchase but the obstacles are the lack of infrastructure and various safety issues.

The study suggests that almost 62 per cent of the surveyed people said that lack of refuelling stations is a big reason for its less popularity. However, two out of five people confirmed that the CNG safety mechanisms are not trust worthy.

As per the survey which ushers on the issues like perception, popularity and performance of the CNG cars, 80 per cent of the CNG buyers say that the car being eco friendly and possessing lower pollution emissions are a main reason for the purchase over the cost effective cars. And Hyundai registers 34 per cent, Tata Motors is on third with 31 per cent, Chevrolet with 18 per cent and Ford with 14 per cent are the ones which join the club. However, the 51 per cent interviewed said that they will purchase a new car in the coming six months.

As per the survey, the declining performance of the CNG car models is one thing that works against it. 40 per cent of the interviewers feel that CNG gives low performances against the petrol and diesel version.
