The testing ground was the controlled premises of Euro NCAP

It will be a while before India gets its own facility to test cars for safety. For the uninitiated, that facility will be christened the Bharat New Car Assessment Programme (Bharat NCAP). Till then, we will have to make do with the crash test results that other laboratories share for cars that are also on sale in India. We recently reported how the Chevrolet Enjoy and the Ford Figo Aspire performed in crash tests conducted by the Global NCAP. This time around, it is the Euro NCAP facility that has put new models of the Audi Q5 and the Land Rover Discovery through crash tests. Here’s how they performed.

Audi Q5

The new Audi Q5 has received a perfect five-star score in the Euro NCAP safety tests. The standard safety equipment for the two adult occupants at the front included front, side-head, side-chest and side-pelvis airbags, and seat-belt pretensioner and loadlimiters. For the rear-seat child occupants, the model had side-head airbags, seat-belt pretensioner and loadlimiters. Other safety tech included ISOFIX anchorages, airbag cut-off switch for front passenger, and seat-belt reminder for all occupants. Euro NCAP reported that Audi’s PreSense City tech, which comes standard with the Q5 and helps in autonomous emergency braking, performed well to further minimize the impact.

Land Rover Discovery

Like the Audi Q5, the new model of the Land Rover Discovery scored a five-star safety rating. The standard safety equipment for the Discovery is the same as in the Audi Q5. The only difference is that the German SUV features an active bonnet, which helps reduce injury to pedestrians, and doesn’t have Lane Assist System, which the English offering features. The result is pretty evident in the scores received in sub-categories. The Discovery falls behind in categories of adult and child occupant safety. However, it lunges ahead of the Q5 in scores for safety assist tech and pedestrian safety.

Results like these confirm the fact that while European cars are expensive, they tend to deliver on all fronts, be it comfort, luxury, performance or safety. And we’d recommend that you too take a lead in India and keep in mind how safe the prospective car is for the passengers and pedestrians when you head out to purchase your next car.
