The new sub-4m SUV could preview a similar product for India

Update: Official: Toyota Raize Will Not Launch In India

  • Toyota Raize is a small SUV, same length as the Maruti Brezza, built by Daihatsu.

  • Will be powered by a 1.0-litre turbo-petrol engine with a CVT automatic.

  • Gets 9-inch touchscreen infotainment system with digital instrument cluster.

  • Raize can preview the appearance of upcoming Toyota-Suzuki shared sub-4m SUV in India.

  • Toyota is expected to launch its co-developed small SUV here by 2022.

The Toyota Raize sub-4 metre SUV has been officially introduced in Japan. It is based on the model developed by Daihatsu, a Toyota subsidiary, and built upon the DNGA architecture. The Raize, also called the ‘Rise in its native market’, could preview the 2022 Toyota-Suzuki sub-4m SUV for India as well.

In terms of size, the Raize is the exact same length as the current-gen Brezza and Venue but has a longer wheelbase and more boot space. The Maruti model is 105mm wider and 20mm taller than the Toyota offering. The Venue is 85mm wider but 15mm shorter in height.

Toyota and Suzuki had already announced plans to include the next-generation Vitara Brezza in their list of shared models for India. The co-developed sub-4m SUV will be built at Toyota’s Bengaluru plant by 2022. We believe Toyota will stick with a similar look as it features similar proportions to the Brezza or any other sub-4m SUV in India.

In Japan, the Toyota sub-compact SUV is offered with a 1.0-litre turbocharged unit mated to a CVT automatic. This engine is tuned to produce 98PS and 140Nm. However, the model that will be shared between Toyota and Suzuki would likely feature a Maruti Suzuki petrol powertrain with choice of manual and automatic transmissions. The Raize also gets a four-wheel-drive option, which is unlikely to be offered on a sub-4m SUV in India.

The Raize gets an all-black interior and the top variants get red accents too. It is equipped with collision warning, crash avoidance braking, parking assist and cruise control. It also gets a freestanding 9-inch touchscreen infotainment system, an LED digital speedometer and a 7-inch TFT colour display for the instrument cluster.

Toyota’s sub-4m SUV, shared with Maruti, will rival the likes of the Hyundai Venue, Kia QXI, Tata Nexon and Mahindra XUV300. It will likely be priced within a range of Rs 7 lakh to Rs 11 lakh.
