A new Japanese SUV could be headed our way, here’s what you need to know

Update: Official: Toyota Raize Will Not Launch In India

Toyota recently added a new model to its portfolio - an SUV called the Raize. While it is only offered in Japan currently, it could be introduced in other markets as well. Here are the five things you need to know about the Raize:

  1. It’s Small

The Toyota Raize is a sub-4 metre SUV with seating for five. That’s right, it’s in the same segment as the Maruti Vitara Brezza, Hyundai Venue, Mahindra XUV300, Ford EcoSport and Tata Nexon. It’s 3995mm long and has a wheelbase of 2525mm.

  1. It’s Actually A Daihatsu

The Toyota Raize is based on a model built by one of Toyota’s subsidiaries - the Daihatsu Rocky. Both models are built on the same DNGA platform but sport different exterior styling. The Rocky, too, is an all-new model that was revealed at the 2019 Tokyo Motor Show.

  1. Features

Toyota has equipped the Raize with a host of features like cruise control, a 9-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay, a digital instrument cluster with a 7-inch TFT display and an all-black interior. Safety features include collision warning, parking assist and crash avoidance braking.

  1. Engine

The Raize is only offered with one engine in the Japanese market - a 1.0-litre turbocharged petrol unit mated to a CVT automatic. It is tuned to produce 98PS of power and 140Nm of peak torque. The Raize is offered in both front-wheel-drive and four-wheel-drive configurations.

  1. Will It Come To India?

Not exactly. The Toyota Raize could have been the brand’s ticket to enter the popular sub-4m SUV segment in India. However, Toyota has partnered with Suzuki to share the next-generation Vitara Brezza, which is set to be introduced in 2022. Both SUVs will feature an exterior design unique to themselves. However, the Raize could preview the design and features of the upcoming sub-4m SUV. When launched, it will likely be priced between Rs 8 lakh to Rs 11 lakh.
