Join us on this journey of discovery as we showcase the latest advancements in automotive technology, making driving more engaging, informative, and visually captivating than ever before.

In the ever-evolving world of automotive technology, cars are becoming more than just modes of transportation. They are transforming into interactive hubs where cutting-edge innovation and digital entertainment seamlessly blend. The most visible observation of these changes is in the growing size (and number) of in-car displays, which includes both the touchscreen unit in the centre and the digital gauge clusters.

These colossal displays are revolutionising how we experience our time on the road, offering a fascinating fusion of functionality and entertainment. From jaw-dropping visual experiences to intuitive user interfaces, find out how automotive giants around the world are reshaping the driving landscape, not just with drivetrains but with screens too.

Mercedes EQS (56 inches)

Mercedes-Benz EQS MBUX Display

The big daddy of displays comes from the flagship luxury electric sedan. The Mercedes-Benz EQS’ Hyperscreen measures 56 inches, spanning the entire dashboard, and comprising three displays under a single glass surface: a 12.3-inch driver's display, a 12.3-inch passenger-side touchscreen, and a 17.7-inch central touchscreen. The driver's display shows speed, navigation, and other driving-related information. The passenger display offers media, navigation, and other information. The central touchscreen operates the climate control and other vehicle functions.

The MBUX Hyperscreen has set the current standard for top-of-the-line in-car display setups. Indian buyers can experience it as an optional extra on the EQS that starts from Rs 1.59 crore (ex-showroom).

Cadillac Celestiq (55 inches)

Cadillac Celestiq Display

The Cadillac Celestiq is a luxury electric vehicle in the US and the only one that comes close to the Mercedes Hyperscreen. It features a massive 55-inch curved integrated display across the width of the dashboard for the digital instrument cluster, infotainment touchscreen (with gesture controls), and passenger-side display. In addition, it has an 11-inch touchscreen rising up from the central console with additional displays in the back for rear passenger entertainment.

Lincoln Nautilus (48 Inches)

Lincoln Nautilus Display

We stay in the American automotive space with the next biggest in-car display found on the Lincoln Nautilus, a luxury SUV. It too has a dashboard-wide display integrated into the sightline of the cabin design, measuring a total of 48 inches. This display setup is split into two broad halves, just like the front of the cabin for the driver and the passenger.

Additionally, there is a touchscreen command centre just below the massive display.

Lucid Air (34 inches)

Lucid Air Display

It seems the Americans apply the expression “supersize it” to everything they can, with number four on this list from the Lucid Air. This luxury electric sedan features a curved 34-inch display unit which houses both the digital gauge cluster and the touchscreen infotainment unit. Unlike the previous designs, this one isn’t just a giant block but an old-school driver-oriented shape that tapers as it ends in the centre of the dashboard.

BMW i7 (31.3 inches)

BMW i7 Rear-seat Display

The BMW i7 luxury sedan gets two fairly large displays on its dashboard, but neither of them earns it such a high spot on this list. The showstopper is actually the 31.3-inch Theatre Screen in the rear. This massive touchscreen is housed in the roof and the only one on this list that can be deployed on command.

Besides, if this were a list for the most number of touchscreens, the i7 might have been at the top as it also has a removable tablet for rear seat comfort controls, and small touchscreens on the rear doors as well. The i7 is available in India as well, with a price tag of Rs 1.95 crore (ex-showroom).

Chevy Silverado EV (17.0 Inches)

We’re back in the US for this one – the Chevy Silverado EV. This electric pickup truck has an optional 17-inch touchscreen infotainment system which sits right alongside the 11-inch digital driver’s display. This massive touchscreen in the dashboard's centre controls everything from the climate control, to navigation, to the audio, and more.

Tesla Model S & Model X (17.0 inches)

Tesla Model S and Model X Display

Sharing a spot with the Chevy Silverado is the company that sort of started the race for the biggest screens, though it has dropped down the list somewhat. At 17 inches, the Tesla Model S and Model X still feature one of the biggest standalone central displays in a production car. And unlike the top cars in the list, it’s one massive touchscreen unit, and not a mix of displays under a single glass.

It replaced the iconic vertically oriented central display for every single vehicle function and entertainment that was unique to Tesla EVs. It’s still the same size, just more like a PC monitor than a console-sized tablet.

Porsche Taycan (16.8 Inches)

Porsche Taycan Displays

The Porsche Taycan is a high-performance electric vehicle with a curved 16.8-inch display for the digital instrument cluster. It also has haptic touch controls for various vehicle operations at both ends of the display unit. The Taycan also has a 10.9-inch touchscreen infotainment system in the dashboard's centre and an 8.4-inch touchscreen below it for the climate control system. We can expect to see similar setups in upcoming Porsche models and generational updates as well.

You can experience the Taycan’s big screen in India too, though at Rs 1.53 crore (ex-showroom).

Rivian R1T (15.6 Inches)

Rivian R1T Display

The Rivian R1T is an American electric pickup truck and its futuristic yet simple cabin features a centrally mounted 15.6-inch touchscreen interface. It is among the more conventionally styled displays on this list with no fancy shapes or funky functions. There are other screens too, such as the 12.3-inch digital driver’s display which doesn’t offer many options for customisation. The R1T also has a three-row SUV equivalent called the R1S, with the exact same dashboard.

Ford Mustang Mach-E & F-150 Lightning (15.5 Inches)

Ford Mustang Mach-E Display
Ford F-150 Lightning Display

Ford's two most promising EVs, the F-150 Lightning and Mustang Mach-E feature the brand’s latest 15.5-inch touchscreen. This gives both a high-tech feel, especially the Lightning, as trucks are not usually known for their advanced interior technology. The large, vertically oriented screen is only standard on the Mach-E, while lower trims of the F-150 Lightning have a smaller screen.

Ford has also cleverly integrated a large, physical volume knob into the touchscreen, a welcome change in a sea of haptic controls that are more distracting than convenient. It also sets itself apart from the plethora of electric pickups and SUVs in the US that have massive screens.

Finishing our tour of the largest in-car displays, one thing becomes abundantly clear: the future of driving is undeniably intertwined with immersive digital experiences.

As automotive giants continue to push boundaries and innovate, we can only imagine the possibilities that lie ahead. With the BMW i Vision Dee, we got our first preview of using the entire windscreen as a projector heads-up display which is set to make it to production by 2025. With each new advancement, the line between cars and the digital ecosystem blurs further, promising a future where our vehicles become extensions of our digital lives.
