The Duster would soon be a petrol-only SUV as Renault plans to stop selling diesel models in the BS6 era

  • Renault could update the current 1.5-litre petrol engine to meet the BS6 emission norms.

  • New, more powerful petrol engines on the cards.

  • Likely to get Renault’s latest 1.0-litre and 1.3-litre turbocharged petrol engines from Euro-spec models.

  • BS6 Duster will attract a premium over the current petrol variants starting at Rs 8 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi).

It seems to be the season for spotting BS6 test mules of all sorts. This one is a BS6 version of the Renault Duster compact SUV that was recently facelifted. Spied here with a camo-wrap, it will be launched before the April 2020 deadline.

The BS6 Duster will be powered by a petrol engine since Renault already announced its plans to discontinue offering a diesel engine in the BS6 era. While the India-spec Duster is currently available with a 1.5-litre petrol engine, the latest second-gen Euro-spec Duster is powered by new turbocharged 1.0-litre and 1.3-litre petrol engines.

Both the turbocharged engines are compliant with Euro 6d-TEMP or Euro 6.2 emission norms which are even more stricter than the BS6 emission norms (BS6 ~ Euro 6).

Renault is yet to confirm the BS6 petrol engine lineup for the Duster. The 1.0-litre TCe engine is expected to replace the 1.5-litre petrol offering while the 1.3-litre TCe could replace the diesel engine for the Duster in India as it offers an AWD setup. It is also possible that Renault updates the 1.5-litre petrol engine for BS6 norms and only add the 1.3-litre TCe option.

The second-gen Duster that is offered in Europe seems to have been skipped altogether here and we’ve only got mild facelifts since. The current-gen Renault Duster petrol variants are priced between Rs 8 lakh to Rs 10 lakh. If the same engine is updated to meet the upcoming BS6 emission norms, the Duster could get dearer by upto Rs 30,000.
