GM India is expected to re-launch Chevrolet Captiva SUV in an all new avatar by March. One major upgrade is the 2.2 l diesel engine which will replace the 2.0 l diesel engine in current models of Chevrolet Captiva. The new Chevrolet Captiva SUV will flaunt a striking exterior, a broader front grill and revamped interiors. It will see a hike of 2 lakh from its predecessor putting it in the premium Rs 20-22 lakh section.P Balendran, vice-president, General Motors India stated in an interview that at present the car comes to India as a completely built unit from South Korea. He further added that depending on the demand of the SUV, the company can assemble the SUV in India. At present 100 units of Chevrolet Captiva are sold per month.

Sources tell us that release of new Chevrolet Captiva SUV has been delayed by few months as GM India is waiting to first clear the stocked up models with dealers. GM India also has plans to launch a right-hand drive variant of luxury sports car Camaro in India. However, their premium sedan Malibu will not see Indian roads any time soon. On the other hand, rival companies like Toyota relaunched its SUV Fortuner with a facelift earlier this year and is recording a consistent sale of 900 units per month.

While M&M is all set to launch a premium SUV with South Korean carmakers Ssangyong. Figures released by SIAM (Soceity of Indian Automobile Manufacturers) tell us that sale of premium SUV’s in 25 lakh price range have shown a rise of 12 per cent in last year. To be specific 17,549 cars were sold between April and December 2011. In such market, targeting the premium SUV sector with a refurbished Chevrolet Captiva and Camaro is definitely a smart move from General Motor India.
