Maruti Swift And Dzire To Get CNG Option Soon
Both will get the same 1.2-litre DualJet petrol engine, but in a lower state of tune

Maruti has been offering petrol-only models ever since the BS6 norms came into effect in April 2020. While it’s still not clear if the carmaker would bring back the popular diesel engines, it seems more Maruti cars will get a CNG option sooner than later. At least, that’s what recent spy shots of the Swift and Dzire with emission testing kits suggest. We think one reason for Maruti to expand its CNG portfolio could be due to the rising fuel prices across the country.
Currently, only six Maruti cars come with a CNG kit, including the S-Presso and Ertiga. Now, the addition of the Swift and Dzire will only fortify the carmaker’s CNG lineup and provide more choices to customers in the absence of diesel-powered models.
Both have the same 1.2-litre DualJet petrol engine (90PS/113Nm), paired with a 5-speed manual and AMT gearbox options. However, with the CNG kit, Maruti will likely only offer the 5-speed MT, and the engine output could also see a marginal drop (when driven in pure CNG mode), as seen with other CNG-equipped Maruti cars.

As of now, the carmaker offers the CNG kit on the S-Presso, Celerio, and Ertiga’s VXi trims. So, chances are things won’t be any different with the Swift and Dzire. And if that happens, the CNG variant(s) will get the same features as the petrol-powered VXi trims, including a four-speaker sound system, steering-mounted audio and calling controls, and keyless entry.
The Swift and Dzire’s CNG variants will likely command a Rs 90,000 premium over the corresponding petrol variants. Maruti retails the hatchback from Rs 5.81 lakh to Rs 8.42 lakh and the sedan from Rs 5.98 lakh to Rs 9.02 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi).
The Swift CNG will have a direct rival in the Hyundai Grand i10 Nios CNG. Whereas, the Dzire CNG will soon face competition from the upcoming Tata Tigor CNG.
