Mahindra Thar

The Thar RWD was launched in January 2023.
It is sold in three variants: AX (O) diesel MT, LX diesel MT and LX petrol AT.
Until now, only recognised by absence of the 4x4 badging on the rear of the sides.
Mahindra offers the SUV with three engine options: two diesel and a turbo-petrol.
Prices of the Thar RWD range from Rs 10.54 lakh to Rs 13.49 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi).

The Mahindra Thar has been a popular choice of off-road enthusiasts ever since it went on sale in 2020. As the 4WD SUV kept getting pricier, the carmaker introduced its more affordable rear-wheel-drive (RWD) variants in early 2023. Now, a new image of the Thar has come to our attention which shows a rather interesting bit of branding for the RWD variants of the SUV.

A New Moniker

The 4WD variants get their own 4X4 badge on the rear fenders for distinction, and the way to identify the RWD version was to note the absence of the badge. However, we’ve now seen the RWD version of the Thar sporting a new “RWD” moniker, indicating its introduction soon. It is mostly white lettering with a splash of red on the final letter.

Apart from the new badge, there doesn’t seem to be any visible change to the Thar RWD.

No Change In Hearts

Mahinda Thar engine

Mahindra is offering the Thar RWD with a 2-litre turbo-petrol engine (152PS/up to 320Nm) and a 118PS, 1.5-litre diesel engine. There’s also a 2.2-litre diesel engine (130PS/300Nm) on offer although only with the 4WD version. All engines get a 6-speed manual as standard, while the larger diesel engine along with the petrol unit also come with a 6-speed automatic option.

Variants And Prices

Mahindra offers the Thar RWD in three variants – AX (O) diesel MT, LX diesel MT and LX petrol AT – priced between Rs 10.54 lakh and Rs 13.49 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi). The Thar takes on the Force Gurkha and the upcoming Maruti Jimny.
