The new Honda CR-V, which was launched in India last year, has just been put through Euro NCAP crash tests and the results are quite resounding, to say the least.  The SUV received a perfect 5-star safety rating in the stringent Euro crash tests. The unit that was tested featured five seats. In India, the CR-V diesel gets seven seats while the petrol-powered version gets five. The safety equipment on board the Euro-spec Honda CR-V includes:

  • Six airbags

  • ABS with EBD

  • Autonomous emergency braking

  • ISOFIX mounts

  • Collision mitigation system

  • Autonomous emergency braking

  • Lane assist system

  • Seatbelt reminder

  • Airbag cut-off switch

Here’s a detailed breakdown of the CR-Vs test results:

Adult Safety

In the frontal offset crash, the body shell was rated as stable and the dummy readings showed good protection for the knees and femur of front passengers. Even in the full width side barrier test, the protection for critical body areas was confirmed to be fine. A side pole impact, however, dropped the chest protection of occupants to marginal. Further, the rear seats showed lower protection from whiplash in the rear-end collision test.

Total score: 35.7/38

Children safety

The second row of the Honda CR-V gets ISOFIX mounts and under frontal offset crash tests, the neck of the 10-year-old dummy showed marginal protection due to tensile forces whereas the remaining dummies had good or adequate protection. It, however, received full marks in the side impact test.

Total score: 21.7/24 pts

Pedestrian Safety

The collision mitigation brake system in the Honda CR-V is activated once the car crosses 5kmph. As for the bonnet construction of the CR-V, safety for pedestrians received good or adequate rating over most of its surface. The CR-V scored well in terms of pedestrian’s leg safety, while for the pelvis, it was a mixed bag.

Total score: 33.6/48

Safety System

The Euro-spec Honda CR-V is equipped with an intelligent speed limiter, lane keep assist and autonomous emergency braking  (AEB) system, which gave it good scores when tested at highway speeds. The AEB was reported to be working fine even when tested for city driving conditions.

Total score: 9.9/16

The India-spec Honda CR-V comes with features like six airbags, ABS with EBD, rear parking sensors, brake assist, driver attention assist, vehicle stability assist and hill start assist as well as agile handling assist.
