Hyundai Motors had recently gathered lot of media attention with the launch of Grand i10 in India. It seems like the company doesn't need to rest, and now again it is gearing up to present a sub-4 meter sedan to the Indian market. This compact sedan/sub-4 meter car is developed based on grand i10 platform (BA). Recent times have observed the compact sedan segment expanding at fast pace in the local market, which could be the reason for Hyundai to bring its own contender. The segment originated with the automakers escaping from tax hike situation has now turned as the booming car segment in India. As of the facts are concerned, this particular car segment has received maximum response.
As per the official sources of the company, the wait for the Grand i10 based sedan model has been declared up till April 2014. The Hyundai compact sedan will lock horns with few segment leading models like, Maruti Suzuki Dzire, Honda Amaze and Tata Indigo eCS. The notchback, with differently designed front facade, is positioned to fill the gap created by discontinuing company's flagship sedan model i.e. Hyundai Accent. So, this sedan will be placed exactly below the Hyundai Fluidic Verna.
Looking at the exteriors of the compact sedan, it largely resembles to its hatchback version upto the B-Pillar. The rear will definitely be different in that sense to make it look completely different than Grand i10. It is definite that this compact sedan will show up with petrol and turbodiesel options, but it is not sure that if the compact sedan will be made available with LPG/CNG options. Since Grand i10 sports generous levels of features, the same could be expected with this compact sedan model. Looking at the competition, this compact sedan should appear with advanced safety features comprising of twin airbags, Anti-Braking System combined with electronic brake distribution as standard on all top-variants.
As far as mechanical specs are concerned, as it is based on Grand i10 hatch, it will house both petrol and diesel engines. The petrol variant will show up with 1.2-liter Kappa Dual VTVT (variable timing valve train), which has the ability to churn maximum power output of 82bhp at 6000rpm and 114Nm of peak torque at 4000rpm. The petrol engine model will arrive with both five-speed manual transmission gearbox and 4-speed automatic transmission. On the other hand, the diesel variant will feature 1.1-liter engine, which is capable to belt out a maximum power output of 70bhp at 4000rpm and 160Nm of top torque at 2750rpm. While this diesel engine model will be looked forward with the launch of the compact sedan.
Looking at the positioning of the vehicle, the grandi10 based sedan is surely expected with generous level of features bound to it. The major change would be the presence of boot at the rear, which actually be one of the distinguishable element to identify it as the compact/sub-4 meter sedan. With this, there will be plenty of space created at the rear seats offering better legroom and headroom. The sedan will feature comfortable seating arrangement for five passengers.
Few features which could be part of the upcoming Grand i10 based sedan include, central locking, reverse parking sensors, rear defogger, 2-DIN integrated audio system with USB, with 1 GB internal memory, Aux-In, Bluetooth connectivity. Moreover, it can house various comfort features like map pocket, glove box, floor console storage, power windows, luggage lamp, seat back pocket, center console storage and many such others. The steering wheel will house audio controls. As the grand i10's top variant is rich in comfort features, the same can be transcended this compact sedan which is based on the same hatch. Few more such features of Grand i10 hatch include, rear AC vent, smart key with start/stop push button, electric mirror, height adjustable driver seat, tilt steering and cooled glove box. The mileage figures will be such that this sedan could easily be placed as stronger contender against segment leaders like Maruti Suzuki Dzire and Honda Amaze. And the pricing again will strategically done to place the sedan well in the market. All these factors will matter the success of the first sub-4 meter sedan from Hyundai India.

There is nothing different from the hatchback of this model except the addition of the boot. We have the same sleek radiator front grille with the thin chrome bar and the Hyundai logo embossed at the center. At both ends of the grille we have the shining head lamp cluster with turn indicators. The fog lamps are at the lower body colored bumper in black matt finish. For the petrol one we have the 1.2-liter Kappa dual VTVT (variable timing valve train) which provides a displacement of 1197cc. The engine is capable enough to generate a maximum power of 82bhp running at 6000rpm and a maximum torque of 114Nm at 4000rpm. For transmission there are two options to choose from one is the five speed manual and the other is the 4 speed automatic transmission gear box. For the diesel variant there is a 1.1-liter U2 CRDi mill which produces a power of 70bhp at 4000rpm and a torque of 160Nm for a range between 1500-2750rpm. THIs 1120cc diesel engine is manufactures in India at the manufacturing plant located in Chennai.
The petrol version of the car is powered by a 1.2-liter Kappa Dual VTVT engine which is capable enough to generate a power of 82bhp at the rate of 6000rpm and a torque of 114Nm at the rate of 4000rpm which is pretty good. The 1.1-liter diesel engine can belt out a peak power of 70bhp at 4000rpm and a peak torque of 160Nm at 2750rpm which is also quite impressive. These figures are not only on the papers but are also true in the real world. This amount of power and torque with the amazing mileage figures is surely going to suit the Indian drivers.
Grand i10 sedan comes in both its petrol and diesel models which deliver a decent acceleration. The petrol engine is the same which powers the i10 and i20 models, so there are no doubts as both the earlier models are known pretty well. The grand i10 can be taken from 0-100kmph in a time of around 16 seconds which is quite decent. Though there is a bit of problem with high RPM as usually it gets jerky or in a better manner it loses its efficiency. This goes both for petrol and diesel variants. Top speed of the diesel variant is around 157kmph and the petrol variant has it a bit higher.
The Hyundai Grand i10 model is expected to be launched in both the petrol and diesel variants. This would be quite advantageous because of the rising fuel prices; i10 sedan with the Hyundai tag and diesel variants is surely going to attract some attention. The petrol variant of this sub 4 meter sedan will deliver a mileage of 18.9kmpl while the diesel variant returns a healthy mileage of 24kmpl when driven under standard conditions. With such a mileage this sedan is good option for the buyers, because with the fuel efficiency it also has amazing features and technology.
In the infotainment section there is a standard music system with features like AUX-in, Bluetooth, stereo mounted controls etc. The other accessories that come with the sedan are the seat covers which the buyer can choose form leather of premium fabric, the steering wheel and gear knob with leather upholstery. For effective braking Hyundai has incorporated this car with the conventional disc and drum braking system, with the disc in the front and drum at the rear. The top end variants have the ABS technology which further improves the brake mechanism. The suspension system is also very good and balanced, for the front we have the McPherson strut with coil springs while at the rear there is the twist beam. This makes the stable on roads providing better handling.
In terms of safety also the Hyundai Grand i10 sedan leads the way in its segment, as it comes equipped with many new and advanced features. The new sedan is going to be a bit heavier than the i20 one to provide it more stability and offer god top speed. For the protection of the passengers there are dual airbags at the front which avoids any injuries to the driver and co-passenger in case of head on collision. At the rear bumper there are two reflectors which glow when light falls on it avoiding any accidents during night from the rear sides. There is ABS (Anti-Lock Braking System) with EBD (Electronic Brake force Distribution) technology fitted with the tyres which avoids skidding of the car in case of instantaneous braking by dividing the applied mechanical power to different tyres in the amount they need to provide minimal stopping distance.
The car is blessed with the 14 inch alloy wheels for the high end variant and steel wheels for the low end models. The rims are equipped with tubeless radial tyres with size165/65 R14 to provide a superior grip on the road.
