The new-generation Thar has been a hit with the crowds since its launch in October 2020 and this 6x6 version by DC is sure to send its admirers into a frenzy

DC2 Design, one of India’s prominent car customisation companies, has revealed the Thar 6x6! From the looks of it, the design seemed like a one-off concept, so we got in touch with Dilip Chhabria. Turns out, we were wrong. The Thar 6x6 is indeed a realistic project, that is if you have enough money in the bank. Here’s all you need to know about it:

How Did the Project Come to Life?

Vehicles such as the Mercedes-Benz G Wagon 6x6 and the custom-made Jeep Gladiator 6x6 are proof that people love 6x6 vehicles. However, these are hyper luxury products, leaving the Indian elite yearning for something closer to home. This led to the Thar 6x6 coming to life.

What Hidden Modifications Have Been Made?

Apart from the redesigned body, windshields, lights, interior, and new tyres (all of which are visible), DC has made some changes to the chassis as well. While the section up till the rear tyre has been untouched, DC has used outriggers to extend the chassis at the rear and make room for the new third axle. Despite all of this, the overhangs of the vehicle have been kept extremely short. This allows for good approach and departure angles, and DC says this modified Thar 6x6’s pickup deck has a 1-ton payload capacity.

What Changes Have Been Made to the Engine and Transmission?

If you are looking to commission the Thar 6x6 in India, the powertrain of the vehicle remains unchanged. However, DC has said the Thar 6x6 is primarily aimed at the Indian population living in the UK, where it will be offered with a 4.0-litre Ford engine and an 8-speed transmission.

How Long Will it Take to Convert a Regular Thar Into a 6x6?

DC2 Design has said it will need 120 days to convert a regular Thar into a Thar 6x6.

Is the Thar 6x6 You See in the Images the Only One You Can Get?

The design of the Thar 6x6 will stay the same, however, DC is offering the option of different colours and trims.

Which Variants of the Thar Can Be Used for This Customisation?

According to DC, all variants of the Thar can be used to build the Thar 6x6.

How Much Will it Cost?

The biggest question people have when it comes to such extreme customisations is the cost. You might want to sit down before reading this bit. The cost of converting a regular Thar into the Thar 6x6 is Rs 55 lakh, plus GST at 28 percent, taking the total cost to Rs 70.40 lakh! That is aside from a new Mahindra Thar that you will have to give DC for modification.

Will it be Legal?

Apart from the cost, another important question for prospective buyers is the legality of this vehicle. DC has said customers will have to take legal approvals from the required authorities (the RTO in this case) and inform DC of the same. This is the general practice that companies follow when undertaking extreme customisations such as this one.
