The second-generation Volvo XC60 has finally been revealed at the 2017 Geneva Motor Show. The first generation of the SUV was introduced nine years ago and has sold more than a million units globally. The new XC60 is based on the same, Scalable Product Architecture (SPA) platform as the XC90 and also borrows design elements and a lot of features from its elder sibling.

It features new LED headlamps and redesigned 'Thor's Hammer' LED DRLs that extend up to the grille. On the rear end, it has Volvo's signature L-shaped taillight cluster with LED lights. Step inside and you'll see a 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system on the centre console. There’s also a four-zone climate control system as well as aircon controls for the rear passengers.

In terms of mechanicals, the new SUV offers three petrol and two diesel engines. All of them are coupled to an eight-speed transmission. The most important engine is the T8, the plug-in hybrid petrol engine that pumps out 407PS and can push the SUV from a standstill to the 100kmph mark in just 5.3 seconds. While the D4 diesel motor produces 190PS, the D5 puts out 235PS. The other two petrol engines, the T5 and the T6, produce 254PS and 320PS, respectively.

Volvo cars are some of the safest cars on the planet and the new XC60 also exhibits its family traits. It is packed with the latest safety features like steer assist, Blind Spot Indication System (BLIS), and oncoming lane mitigation. Volvo's semi-autonomous driver assistance system – the Pilot Assist – can steer, accelerate and even make the SUV brake on well-marked roads, when travelling up to 130kmph.

The Swedish automaker will start the production of the new XC60 in mid-April at the Torslanda Plant in Sweden and it is likely to be introduced in the country sometime next year. It is expected to be priced around the Rs 60 lakh mark and will compete with the likes of the Audi Q5, BMW X3 and the Mercedes-Benz GLC. Volvo introduced the plug-in hybrid variant of the XC90 and its flagship sedan – the S90 – in the Indian market last year.
