Fiat to supply 1.3 liter multijet diesel engine to Premier

The Italian car manufacturer Fiat and Premier Motors of Padmini fame are once again trying to form an alliance. The deal is likely to go through with Fiat agreeing to supply its 1.3 L diesel powerplant for Premier Rio SUV. Fiat, which is well-known for its stint in the diesel engine supply seems to strike gold once again. The pact points to as many as 6000 -8000 diesel engine units for the Premier Rio SUV. Looks like, the car industry is going to witness the re-union of another pair of parted sweethearts yet again. Premier Motors is hoping to revive the dud sales of the Rio with the most advanced diesel engine complying with the current BSIV emission norms.

For those who don’t know the history of the present 1.3 L diesel engine in question, it’s the same that powers the flagship models Maruti Swift and Maruti Ritz. The plans are still in the pipe line, but the Italian manufacturer whose name goes synonymous with diesel powerplant supply is just short of delivering the lot. Maitreyi Doshi, the chairman and Managing Director of Premier Motors has asserted that the deal will definitely go through unconditionally without revealing any details on the time lines. Talking on the subject, why is this deal being considered once again. The root cause is Premier Rio SUV, which had not garnered enough sales for the company. Premier has made the re-entry in the market with Premier Rio in 2009 after falling apart with Fiat in partnership. Fiat Premier Padmini had been the talk of the town for not one or two, but three long decades. 1955-1985 was the period, when one single day did not pass by without encountering atleast one Padmini on the road.

Over a period of time, just like that the car has disappeared into thin air. Now, Premier seeks the help of Fiat to turn around the sales of Rio SUV, which had managed to sell just 2000 units since its launch. Due to its outdated engine that falls behind to meet the BS IV emission norms, Premier Rio was restricted to BS II and III cities. With the new 1.3 L engine, the auto major can paint a an entirely new picture to surge the Premier Rio sales. The SUV will pass the BSIV emission standards in flying colors to enable its entry in the top 13 metros in the country. These cities can be targeted as the key markets to drive the sales volumes for the SUV. Therefore, if the partnership falls in line with their plans, there is no turning back for SUV.
