From now onwards electric cars will not be taxed in Maharashtra. Piyush Goyal, Union Power Minister, declared this at a press conference and added that a formal official announcement will be made soon. Henceforth, Maharashtra will not impose Value Added Tax (VAT), road tax and registration charges on electric vehicles sold in the state. Currently, Mahindra Reva e2o is the only all-electric car sold in the country and will benefit from this scheme in Maharashtra.

"Currently electric cars are subject to VAT, road tax and registration charges. I spoke to state chief minister Devendra Fadnavis and suggested waiver of all types of taxes on electric cars and he has agreed," Piyush Goyal told TOI.

Mahindra and Mahindra executive director Pawan Goenka said, "The car (Reva) currently costs Rs 5 lakh but the price will differ from each city. Tax waiver by Maharashtra is a boost for e-cars.” "We are selling around 8 to 10 electric cars in Mumbai and other districts of Maharashtra. Across the country, the company sells 75 Reva cars a month. We can ramp up production of electric cars to 2,500 a month," he added.

Mahindra is also reportedly launching the zero emission all-electric version of the Verito sedan. The vehicle is expected to be launched around February 2016, probably at the 2016 Indian Auto Expo.
