Tata Nano again catches fire in Sri Lanka
The number of incidents of Tata Nano cars catching fire is slowly and gradually coming under the category of ‘uncountable’. After so many domestic incidents of Tata Nano setting ablaze, its now Sri Lanka where a fresh case is reported on September 2.

The Tata Nano involved in this fiery mishap was a cab used by a Taxi company in Sri Lanka called the Budget Taxi. A spokesman of the company said there were no passengers in the car at the time but the car was completely destroyed – gutted by the fire. Interestingly, Tata Motors had just started exporting Nano cars to Sri Lanka in May this year and had completed its internal investigation on the Nano’s fire incidents before delivery, declaring it to be free from any engineering defects that could potentially have caused the fires. Now that another case has come into notice, Tata Motors’s safety is again under suspicion.

Kelum Jayasumana, the Director of Budget Taxi, said that the reason behind the incident has not been cited yet and the company has contacted the Tata Motors company in India. He said that the vehicle suddenly stopped, and caught fire when the driver tried to restart it. Jayasumana said that they had indeed been informed about the faulty silencers in Nano but they were told that Tata had looked into the issue and rectified it before sending the vehicles to Sri Lanka.

Similar cases have been reported from Mumbai, Gujarat, Lucknow, New Delhi and Vadodara in the past. Experts view faulty electrical switches creating smoke and causing plastic to melt as the reason behind this usual inferno. Meanwhile, sales of the Tata Nano are downgrading and the latest incident will only serve to reduce that further no matter Tata Motors doles out attractive discounts, EMI schemes and freebies to push Nano sales.
