Tata Motors: We did not abdicate Singur land
In the Singur land dispute that is going between Tata Motors and the West Bengal government, Tata Motors said that they themselves did not abandon the land but were forced to do so. Tata Motors said in the Calcutta High Court that they were forced to abandon the land due to barriers and the controversies that they were facing there in Singur.

Challenging the government of their Act by which they were distributing the Singur land among the unwilling farmers of the area, Tata Motors counsel S Mitra said in the court that the TML were wrongly implicated to abdicate the land. The opposition counsel said that the land which Tata Motors claim would be taken by the government, is already under the governments possession. He had earlier said that with their status quo over the land they would not generate any employment and there would be no investment from it in the Automobile sector.
This 997.97 acre of land which was given to Tata Motors for their Nano project is now under the government according to the Singur Rehabilitation and Development Act 2011. Opposing to this the counsel said that the petition was adapted at evening time on June 21 and it was to be regulated from the next morning, but the government took the possession of the land at 9:30 PM on June 21. He also said that Tata India had already invested an amount of Rs. 1,800 crore on the leveling and maintenance of the land.
At the end of the day the court finally relieved Tata Motors by saying that no further step should be taken by the government until the further orders come from the high court. The court was adjourned for the day and the further hearing of the case would be done on another day.
