National Green Tribunal (NGT) has asked Volkswagen to submit an undertaking by January 11 stating that it will not sell vehicles fitted with “cheat devices”. The decision came at a time when some people from Delhi complained that the German carmaker has violated emission norms and thus require to be banned.

The company has got entangled in a worldwide emission scam. Recently the carmaker was sued by the US government over violation of emission norms. The complaint alleged that nearly 6,00,000 diesel engines duped the tests, which has finally led to a harmful affect upon the environment. If claims are proved to be true, the automaker will have to pay penalties of up to $20 billion.

Engines in Volkswagen cars have computer software which can sense test scenarios by analysing various conditions around. As soon as the software has detected such condition, it switches the car into a mode where the engine runs below normal power and performance. This resulted in reduction of emissions and cars were able to pass various tests. As soon as the car got back on the road, it started emitting 40 times more pollutants than what is allowed in the US.

Last month, Volkswagen had recalled over 3 lakh vehicles in India, after allegations of breach of emission norms.
