However, laying all fears to rest, Shyam Saran, special envoy to PM Manmohan Singh, scoffed the suggestion that people in developing countries should not aspire to own cars, as he said that Tata Nano was one of the most fuel-efficient cars. He also added that its entry into the market would not divert India from its focus on developing mass transport systems as sustainable development. ‘‘We can't say automobile industry should meanwhile not develop,'' Saran said. ‘‘We can't tell people you don't buy car or TVs or that they shouldn't have access to energy because of the climate change problem.
