Mitsubishi mulls a small car for India

The Japanese car manufacturer, is apparently planning to develop a small car for India at its Thailand manufacturing plant. The small car is envisaged to be rolled out from its Thailand unit globally to take upon the rivals in the segment including Volkswagen Polo, Fiat Punto, Maruti Ritz, Hyundai i10 and Nissan Micra in India.

The Thailand unit of the Japanese car manufacturer is anticipating to roll out around 2 lakh models every year. However, the production figures are subjective to change to capitalize on the demand for the small cars in the emerging car markets. The engine capacity of the hatchback is supposed to be in the range of 1.0L to 1.2 L capacity. The Japanese car manufacturer intends to ramp up its production capacity in its domestic manufacturing plant to 1 lakh units from the current 12,000 units. With the launch of the new hatchback, Mitsubishi anticipates the demand for the car to go up to expand its production capacity.

Mitsubishi currently offers its high performance cars in India including Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X, Mitsubishi Pajero, Mitsubishi Outlander and Mitsubishi Montero. Mitsubishi presently shares its manufacturing plant with Hindustan Motors in Tiruvallur, Tamilnadu in India.
