Planning To Keep Your 15-Year Old Car? Its Fitness Test Just Got Costlier

  • You will now have to pay Rs 5,000 to renew your 15-year old car’s registration.

  • On the other hand, you just have to pay Rs 600 for the registration of a new car.

  • For imported cars, you have to pay a registration fee of Rs 5,000 and a renewal fee of Rs 40,000.

  • If the car passes its fitness test, you’ll have to pay the RC renewal fee as well.

The Ministry Of Road, Transport And Highways (MoRTH) has increased the prices of the fitness tests for cars older than 15 years. As per the vehicle scrappage policy, privately-owned cars older than 15 years old should be scrapped if they have not cleared their fitness tests.

While the new car registration fee is just Rs 600, it will cost you Rs 5,000 to renew your 15-year old car’s registration. Earlier, the renewal fee was set at Rs 1,500. For imported vehicles, the fees stand at Rs 5,000 and Rs 40,000, respectively. And if your car passes this test, then only you can run it on the road. Otherwise, you’ll have to scrap it. Post this, you also have to pay the RC renewal fee.

If you scrap your old vehicle for a new one, the registration fee will be waived. Plus, there will be a concession of up to 25 percent on the road tax and an additional 5 percent discount from the manufacturer’s side.

The government is setting up automated fitness and scrappage centres across the country. Till now, Mahindra and Renault have offered an in-house facility where the dealerships themselves will manage the entire scrapping process and offer the quote to the owners.

This is clearly a new type of scam. The agents at the facility and officers will get a little more something than the actual renewal fee and get the car passed.
