Scorpio 2014-2022 S4 4WD Review
The company has rolled out the latest version of Mahindra Scorpio, which has been named as “New Generation Scorpio”. It is being sold in six trim levels, out of which, the Mahindra Scorpio S4 4WD is the mid range variant. This rugged SUV features new hydroformed chassis along with the same ladder frame. In terms of technicalities, its engine is paired with a new five speed manual transmission gear box, which is much smoother than before. This variant is fitted with the same 2.2-litre, mHawk diesel power plant, which comes with a displacement capacity of 2179cc. Its suspension mechanism is also modified and now it is accompanied by hydraulic double acting telescopic shock absorbers, which keeps is stable at all times. For attracting the buyers, the manufacturer has updated its exteriors as well as interiors. It is designed with an aggressive frontage, which includes new headlight cluster with headlamps, revamped body colored bumper and a bold radiator grille with a few body colored slats. The overall dimensions are quite standard and it is designed with a large wheelbase of 2680mm and a minimum ground clearance of 180mm. It has an overall length of 4456mm, a decent height of 1995mm and a total width of 1820mm. At the same time, its interiors are fitted with a refreshed dashboard that is equipped with features like a sporty steering wheel and re-designed AC vents. The company has also made some other changes, which gives it an upmarket appearance.
Exteriors:
This recently launched sports utility vehicle has an aggressive body structure with a lot of striking features. To start with the updated frontage, it is designed with bonnet scoop, which has 'low drag intake' design for better air intake that increases engine performance. The bold radiator grille is fitted with a few body colored slats and it is embossed with a prominent chrome plated company logo in the center . This grille is surrounded by a neatly crafted headlight cluster that is incorporated with projector headlamps and side turn indicator. The revised bumper houses a wide air dam, which cools the engine quickly. The side cladding not only gives bold look to the SUV, but also absorbs the impact from the side in case of any accidents and keeps the passengers safe. The door handles and external rear view mirrors are painted in body color. Its wing mirrors are manually adjustable and integrated with side turn blinker. The pronounced wheel arches are fitted with a robust set of 17-inch steel wheels, which are covered with 235/65 R17 sized sturdy tubeless radial tyres. Its rear end remains unchanged and equipped with a stylish tail light cluster. The body colored bumper is fitted with a pair of bright reflectors. Its windscreen is integrated with a centrally located high mounted stop lamp. Currently, the company is selling this utility vehicle in five exterior paint options for the buyers to select from. The list includes Mist Silver, Fiery Black and Diamond White along with a couple of new body color including Regal Blue and Molten Red.
Interiors:
The interiors of this Mahindra Scorpio S4 4WD variant is quite spacious and it is incorporated with a number of sophisticated features. In terms of seating, it is equipped with well cushioned cushioned seats, which are covered with Vinyl upholstery with fabric insert. These seats provide ample leg space and head room for all occupants. The updated dashboard is equipped with a new sporty steering wheel, an advanced instrument panel, a large glove box and re-designed AC vents. The instrument panel features a digital tachometer, an electronic trip meter, low fuel warning light, average consumption, digital clock and driver seat belt warning notification. Its steering wheel comes with tilt adjustable function, which makes it easy to handle even in peak traffic conditions.
Engine and Performance:
This particular variant is powered by a 2.2-litre mHawk diesel engine, which has variable geometry turbocharger with inter-cooler. This 2179cc mill has the ability to churn out a maximum power of 120bhp at 4000rpm in combination with 280Nm between 1800 to 2800rpm. It is mated with a new and smoother five speed manual transmission gear box, which sends the engine power to its all wheels. This motor is integrated with 4-cylinders and 16-valves using double overhead camshaft based valve configuration. It is incorporated with a common rail based direct injection fuel supply system that has the ability to deliver a maximum mileage of 15.4 Kmpl on the highways. At the same time, it can produce 12.5 Kmpl in the city traffic conditions. This SUV can attain a top speed of approximately 156 Kmph, while it can cross the speed barrier of 100 Kmph in about 15.8 seconds from a standstill.
Braking and Handling:
The manufacturer has incorporated this SUV with a reliable braking system. The front wheels are equipped with ventilated disc brakes, while the rear ones have sturdy drum brakes. The front axle is assembled with a double wishbone independent suspension and the rear axle gets a multi link type of system as well as anti roll bar. Both these axles are further loaded with coil springs and hydraulic double acting telescopic shock absorbers. These help the vehicle to maintain stability on uneven road conditions and improves this mechanism as well. On the other hand, it is blessed with a power assisted steering system that has tilt adjustment function and supports a minimum turning radius of 5.65 meters.
Comfort Features:
This mid range variant is bestowed with some comfort aspects that gives a comfortable driving experience. The first and middle row seats are available with 12V charging points using which electronic devices can be charged. It has power window switches on the center console, while there are manually adjustable outside rear view mirrors. This trim includes a HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning) unit that helps in cooling the cabin and in creating pleasant ambiance. The notifications on instrument panel alerts the driver and provides convenience as well. Apart from these, it has a hydraulic assisted bonnet, headlamp leveling switch, remote fuel lid opener, tilt adjustable steering wheel and has a second row can holder on console that adds to their comfort levels.
Safety Features:
This Mahindra Scorpio S4 4WD trim is loaded with a few safety aspects. The collapsible steering column helps in minimizing any injury to the driver if a collision takes place. It has a digital immobilization device, which avoids unauthorized entry and protects it from theft. It has side intrusion beams and crash protection crumple zones that absorb the impact in case of collision and offers protection to its occupants. It also has a central locking system that enables locking and unlocking of doors at the press of a button. Moreover, it is blessed with a widened chassis track that helps it to maintain stability, while providing superior handling even at high speeds.
